Sacred Heart Novena: Traditional Prayer & 12 Promises of Jesus

In these troubled times, when the world seems to have forgotten the love that bled for it on Calvary, the Church in her wisdom places before us the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus as the sure refuge and fountain of every grace. The Sacred Heart Novena, rooted in the private revelations given to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque and approved by Holy Mother Church, stands as one of the most powerful traditional Catholic devotions for obtaining mercy, peace, and final perseverance.

This Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus invites us to draw near to the Heart that was pierced for our sins — that Heart which burns with infinite love for each immortal soul. In the following pages, we shall explore the sacred history of this devotion, the twelve magnificent promises Our Lord made to those who honour His Heart, the complete text of the efficacious Sacred Heart of Jesus Novena Prayer, and practical guidance for living this beautiful devotion in fidelity to the teachings of the saints and the Magisterium.

The Sacred Origins of the Devotion in Paray-le-Monial

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus received its modern heavenly mandate through the humble Visitation nun Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690). Between 1673 and 1675, in the monastery at Paray-le-Monial in France, Our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to her on multiple occasions, revealing His Sacred Heart and requesting a special feast and devotion in its honour.

Our Divine Saviour complained to the saint of the coldness and ingratitude of men toward the Blessed Sacrament and showed her His Heart burning with love, saying: “Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming Itself, in order to testify Its love.”

Holy Mother Church has given her full approval to this devotion. Pope Clement XIII approved the feast in 1765, Pope Pius IX extended it to the universal Church in 1856, and Pope Leo XIII, in his encyclical Annum Sacrum (1899), solemnly consecrated the entire human race to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This traditional Catholic Sacred Heart devotion is a profound act of reparation and love, perfectly in harmony with the doctrine of the Incarnation and the Most Holy Eucharist as taught in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 478) and the writings of the Church Fathers.

The Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Our Lord attached twelve remarkable promises to the Sacred Heart Novena and to those who honour His Divine Heart:

  1. I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
  2. I will establish peace in their homes.
  3. I will comfort them in all their afflictions.
  4. I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.
  5. I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
  6. Sinners will find in My Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
  7. Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.
  8. Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
  9. I will bless every place in which an image of My Heart is exposed and honoured.
  10. I will give to priests the power of touching the most hardened hearts.
  11. Those who promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart.
  12. I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of every month for nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance.

These promises, drawn from the approved revelations to St. Margaret Mary, should fill every faithful soul with holy confidence and inspire greater love for the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

How to Pray the Sacred Heart Novena – The Efficacious Prayer

The most powerful and widely recommended Sacred Heart of Jesus Novena Prayer is the one attributed to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and prayed daily by St. Padre Pio. It may be prayed at any time but is especially fruitful in the nine days before the Feast of the Sacred Heart.

Efficacious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

I. O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of [mention your request]. Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be… Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

II. O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in My name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in Your name, I ask the Father for the grace of [mention your request]. Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be… Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

III. O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but My words will not pass away.” Encouraged by Your infallible words, I now ask for the grace of [mention your request]. Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be… Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us poor sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of You, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Your tender Mother and ours. Hail Holy Queen… St. Joseph, pray for us.

This Sacred Heart of Jesus Novena Prayer should be recited with deep humility, perfect contrition, and unwavering trust in the merciful love of Our Lord.

Living the Devotion: First Fridays and Home Enthronement

The Sacred Heart Novena is most powerful when joined to the practice of the First Fridays and the enthronement of the Sacred Heart in the home. When families honour the Sacred Heart as King, peace — the second promise — often descends in extraordinary ways. This practice echoes the solemn consecration of the world by Pope Leo XIII and the profound teachings of Pope Pius XII in Haurietis Aquas.
