Our Lady Help of Christians: Maternal Protection for the Church in Every Trial

Our Lady Help of Christians: Maternal Protection for the Church in Every Trial

In these latter days, when the Barque of Peter is buffeted by the storms of secularism, error, and open persecution, the devout Catholic soul turns with childlike confidence to the Blessed Virgin Mary under her powerful title Our Lady Help of Christians. Also known as Mary Help of Christians or Auxilium Christianorum, this invocation from the Litany of Loreto stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us that the Mother of God is ever ready to assist her children in the battles of faith.

Devotion to Our Lady Help of Christians is rooted in the timeless teachings of Holy Mother Church. It draws from Sacred Scripture, the Church Fathers, and the lived experience of the saints. Her feast, solemnly celebrated each year on May 24, commemorates a miraculous deliverance of the Papacy and invites every faithful soul to seek her intercession. In this reverent exploration of the history, theology, prayers, and living practice of this beautiful Marian title, we shall see how Mary Help of Christians remains the sure refuge for the Church Militant and for every soul striving for sanctity.

The Sacred Title in the Litany of Loreto

The invocation “Help of Christians” (Auxilium Christianorum) has belonged to the Litany of Loreto since the sixteenth century. Approved by Pope Sixtus V and definitively confirmed by Pope Clement VIII in 1601, this litany is a treasury of praise offered to the Queen of Heaven. The title likely gained special prominence after the Christian victory at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571, when the forces of the Holy League, under the banner of Our Lady of the Rosary, defeated the Ottoman fleet through the power of prayer and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin.

As the Catholic Encyclopedia explains, the invocation may echo older forms such as Advocata Christianorum found in litanies as early as 1524. Yet its place in the universal prayer of the Church testifies to Mary’s role as the powerful helper of all who call upon her in time of need. The Church has always taught that true devotion to Mary leads directly to her Divine Son, Jesus Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 971) reminds us that “the Church’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship,” never separated from the adoration due to the Most Holy Trinity.

Historical Triumph: Pope Pius VII and the Institution of the Feast

The feast of Our Lady Help of Christians on May 24 carries a profoundly moving history. In 1808, by order of Napoleon Bonaparte, Pope Pius VII was arrested and held prisoner for nearly six years—first at Savona and later at Fontainebleau. During this dark hour for the Church, the Holy Father constantly invoked the maternal aid of the Blessed Virgin under the title Help of Christians.

Liberated in March 1814 after the Battle of Leipzig, Pius VII made a triumphant return to Rome exactly on May 24, 1814. The people lined the streets in jubilation as the Vicar of Christ re-entered the Eternal City. Attributing the deliverance of the Papacy and the Church to the powerful intercession of Mary, the Pope visited many of her shrines along the route, crowning her sacred images in gratitude.

On September 15, 1815, Pius VII formally instituted the Feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians for the Papal States, to be celebrated annually on May 24—the anniversary of his return. The feast soon spread throughout the Catholic world. As the Catholic Encyclopedia (New Advent) records: “To give thanks to God and Our Lady he instituted… the feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians, to be celebrated, 24 May.”

This historical event remains an everlasting testimony that no earthly tyrant can ultimately prevail against the Church when her children fly to the protection of the Mother of God.

St. John Bosco: Apostle of Devotion to Mary Help of Christians

Few saints have lived and breathed devotion to Our Lady Help of Christians as deeply as St. John Bosco (Don Bosco), the great apostle of youth and founder of the Salesian Family. In 1868 he consecrated the magnificent Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin, Italy—the mother church of the Salesians and still a center of worldwide pilgrimage today. Don Bosco placed his entire congregation under her protection, declaring that Mary herself had shown him the very spot where the basilica should rise.

Throughout his apostolic labors—amid financial trials, calumnies, and threats from enemies of the Church—Don Bosco experienced the constant, motherly assistance of Auxilium Christianorum. He taught his boys to invoke her daily, and countless miracles of grace, conversions, and temporal help followed. The Salesian Fathers have carried this tender devotion to every continent, building churches, schools, and oratories dedicated to Mary Help of Christians.

Theological Foundation: Mary as Mediatrix and Help of Christians

The title Help of Christians flows directly from the mystery of Mary’s divine motherhood and her cooperation in the work of Redemption. At the foot of the Cross, Our Lord Jesus Christ entrusted all of us to her when He said to the beloved disciple, “Behold thy mother” (John 19:27). The Church Fathers, especially St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Ephrem, and St. Alphonsus Liguori, describe Mary as the Mediatrix of all graces—through whom the treasures won by Christ on Calvary are distributed to souls.

Pope Pius XII, in his encyclical Summi Pontificatus (1939), placed the sufferings of the Church under the powerful intercession of “Mary, Help of Christians,” begging her aid for a true resurrection of Christian civilization. In every age of persecution, heresy, or moral collapse, the Church has experienced the truth of this title. Whether against the Turks at Lepanto, the forces of Napoleon, or the errors of our own time, Mary Help of Christians stands as the invincible Protectress.

Traditional Prayers and Novena to Our Lady Help of Christians

Devotion to Our Lady Help of Christians is nourished above all by prayer. The following prayer, composed by St. John Bosco himself, is especially dear to traditional Catholics:

Prayer to Our Lady, Help of Christians Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christians, how sweet it is to come to your feet imploring your perpetual help. I beg you to grant me the grace to always invoke you, O Mary Help of Christians, in all my necessities, in all my sorrows, and especially in all my temptations. I ask for your unceasing help for all who are now suffering, for all the weak, for the sick, and to convert sinners. Grant through your intercessions many vocations to the religious life. Obtain for us, O Mary, Help of Christians, that having invoked you on earth we may love and eternally thank you in heaven. Amen.

The Novena to Our Lady Help of Christians is traditionally prayed from May 15 to May 23 in preparation for her feast. Each day includes meditation on one of her virtues or titles, the recitation of the prayer above, and the Litany of Loreto, which culminates in the plea: Auxilium Christianorum, ora pro nobis – Help of Christians, pray for us!
